Separate arrival before 9 a.m. The starting point of the tour is Lake Chiemsee. We cycle along the river Prien through the fooothills of the Alps until we can admire the sight of the Fraueninsel and the Herreninsel, the latter island carrying the Herrenchiemsee castle. A steep ascent across the Eiskeller leads us down to the Inntal valley and grants us beautiful views all around. Having reached the “Blue Spring“, we will have a delicious lunch. With renewed strength we can now tackle the last ascent for today, taking us up to the Sudelfeld pastures at an altitude of 1,200 m, where we are spending the night at a mountain hotel in the most idyllic setting.
2. Stage: Sudelfeld – Lenggries |
| 1.700 vm |
| 59 km |
After a short descent in the morning we will pass Bayrischzell a farmers’ village in the countryside visited by King Ludwig as early as 1864. Following some easy to handle paths, we ride along the romantically wild Josephstal valley and soon get to Lake Spitzingsee at an altitude of 1,085 m. Here, near the Tyrolean border, we are partly moving along old smugglers’ paths swiftly leading us across the pastures down to the shores of Lake Tegernsee, where we will have lunch and a long rest. We then continue to Bad Wiessee and on to the Aueralm pasture (1,267 m altitude) and will arrive at our accommodation after a winding descent to the Isarwinkel.
3. Stage: Lenggries – Garmisch |
| 1.100 vm |

We have to start off early for the long distances ahead of us Today. After a 1 hour ascent along forest roads leading to the Klausenalm pasture, we follow a single trail down into the nature reserve at the shores of the Isar. We cycle upstream along the river across hilly landscape until we reach Wallgau. We get a good opportunity to admire the mountains of the Karwendel as we approach Mittenwald at around midday. In the afternoon, we get to Lake Ferchensee, from where we have a wonderful view of the Wetterstein massif including the Zugspitze and the Elmau castle. Covering only very few metres in altitude, we rush down to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, venue of the Olympic winter games. Our destination for the day, Lake Plansee, is only 15 km (and 300 vm) from here. The view of the Lechtaler Alps helps us manage the particularly steep remaining 150 vm.
4. Stage: Garmisch – Castle Neuschwanstein |
| 1.450 vm |
| 50 km |
Well-prepared after a hearty breakfast, we head for Neuschwanstein castle, tackling the last few vertical metres as we follow the Fürstenweg tracking the footsteps of the Bavarian King past the Kuhklause hermitage down to Reutte. During the last ascent we cross the Austro-German border, casting a glance at Lake Alpsee as we rush down toward the romantic castle.
